Laparoscopic right and left hemicolectomy cadaveric course

We offer excellent ‘hands on’ Laparoscopic courses at our state of the art facility, the world class West Midlands Surgical Training Centre.

Offering hands-on training in the heart of the UK is key to our success.

Course Introduction

This course aimed at Senior Speciality Registrars (ST5 and above)

Specifically designed for surgical trainees with a colorectal interest and suitable for trainees in earlier stages of their training with experience in laparoscopic appendicectomy and cholecystectomy.

The laparoscopic approach is now the standard for hemicolectomy, although surgeons may vary in their adopted system and technique to perform these procedures.

This course will teach a structured approach to right and left hemicolectomy by description of individual steps, video demonstration and discussion followed by cadaveric dissection.

Delegates will be paired to each cadaver and have the opportunity to perform laparoscopic right hemicolectomy in the morning followed by laparoscopic left hemicolectomy in the afternoon. Right hemicolectomy will include a stapled anastomosis and left hemicolectomy will involve full splenic flexure mobilisation and if time permits, the dissection can be extended to an anterior resection with TME.

Learning objectives:

• To describe and perform the individual steps of laparoscopic right hemicolectomy, including positioning, instrumentation and medial-to-lateral dissection.

• To be aware of different approaches to ileocolic anastomosis and to perform a stapled anastomosis after right colonic mobilisation.

• To describe and perform the individual steps of laparoscopic left hemicolectomy, including techniques for splenic flexure mobilisation. Specifically, the sub-IMV approach will be demonstrated and performed.

• To be aware and describe alternative approaches to laparoscopic right and left hemicolectomy.
